Dr. Kokame participated in the 25th anniversary meeting of the Midwest Ocular Angiography Conference in Scotland – July 31 – August 3, 2013

The greatest minds in retina met to discuss and tackle the toughest and most difficult cases in clinical decision making in the 25th anniversary meeting of the Midwest Ocular Angiography Conference (MOAC) meeting, which has become the best clinical care meeting in Retina, providing expert opinions and discussions from the most respected physicians in retinal diseases. The meeting was held at the Fairmont St. Andrews in St Andrews Scotland.  This was where Prince William and Kate met and went to college together.  The couple just had a baby boy, Prince George.

The incredible faculty included Professor Alan Bird of Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, Dr. William Mieler – the organizer of the meeting – from University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago, Dr. Lee Jampol from Northwestern University, Dr. Davis Sarraff from the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, Dr. Vas Sadda from the USC School of Medicine, Dr. Jose Pulido – a uveitis and oncology expert from the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Fernando Arevalo from WIlmer and the King Khaled Eye Specialty Hospital in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Mark Johnson of the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor, Dr. Anita Agarwal from Vanderbilt – author of the most recent edition of the Gass Atlas, Dr. Rick Spaide and Dr. Bailey Freund from the Vitreous-Retina-Macula Consultants of New York, Dr. Ralph Eagle – pathologist at the Wills Eye Hospital, Dr, Peter Kaiser of the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, and Dr. David Brown from the Retina Consultants Houston.  However, each and every of the almost 100 attendees presented incredible cases or provided their expert input into the case discussion.  Previous Visiting Retina Professors that we have hosted in Hawaii have included Professor Alan Bird, Bill Mieler, Jose Pulido, Peter Kaiser, Jenny Lim, and Rick Spaide.

This was an incredible meeting  fit for the 25th Anniversary.  The cases and discussions were outstanding, and helped to lead to new ideas for the clinical care of our patients here in Hawaii.  I lectured on a tough diagnositic and therapeutic problem, which all of the doctors at RCH helped to treat, which initially challenged the expert panel, but led to a very interesting discussion on the diagnosis and management of intraocular lymphoma.

The gala celebration dinner was in true Scottish style – in black tie or kilt at a castle – the Sterling Castle – a truly incredible event that was enjoyed by all.
